Representations of Napoleon on horseback were more frequent in drawings of battles than in individual portraits.
Of the three equestrian portraits made under the Consulate, Bonaparte crossing the Alps by David (castle of Malmaison 1800), the First Consul distributing swords of honor by Gros (castle of Malmaison 1801) and Napoleon at the camp of Boulogneby JB Regnaut (Napoleonic Museum of Havana 1804), it was David who most strongly marked the collective memory, which overshadows all other equestrian portraits made during the reign of Napoleon.
This masterpiece is reproduced five times by the artist and his workshop, and is the subject of several copies and engravings widely disseminated.
