In Napoleon's Imperial Guard the sappers marched at the head of the column, with a leather apron and their heavy axes on their shoulders. As the tradition requires, the sappers are all bearded.
Their characteristic sword has an eagle's head at the end of the handle, a symbol par excellence of Imperial imagery, while heads of lions decorate the handle and the center of the guard, as well as the ergot of the scabbard. This one is made of wood covered with blackened natural leather, decorated with plates of brass. The blade, whose back is serrated, is designed to serve as much in combat as a tool to cut wood.
